Hello my friends! Earlier today I released the debut single from my upcoming EP. “The Admiral’s Misadventure” is available on all of the evil platforms ruining the music industry as well as Bandcamp and Soundcloud.
The album features efforts from the following folks:
Colin Poulton - Guitar
Thomas Altman - Bass
Ian Strobino - Drums
Bill Bowers - Mix/Master
We tracked it last year at SAE, an audio engineering school in Nashville, alongside two other tunes that will make up the rest of the EP.
I wrote this in the midst of a Covid quarantine in the late summer of 2021. I had been writing some new music over the past year and this is one of the newer tunes I put together at my new fresh from a breakup apartment. I somehow managed to wrest myself way from playing perversely modded (but not the actually perverse mods) version of Skyrim to accomplish two musical feats during that time - learning Marty Friedman’s solo to Tornado of Souls from Megadeth’s Rust in Peace and writing this tune.
I had spent a lot of the previous year diving into bossa nova, particularly the Antonio Carlos Jobim album Wave and found myself entranced by a record with jazz harmony that was grounded by simple melodies, lush timbres, driving percussion, and most importantly NO GUITAR SOLOS. It became the soundtrack to the extended leave I had been taking from performing live due to the global pandemic that had made me re-evaluate what I had been doing musically. I’m still in the midst of my pivot away from playing in the clubs downtown to, well, other clubs close to downtown that I had started around this time. I began playing with the idea of doing an original project after almost a decade of cover gigging and bouncing around the projects my friends were ultimately at the helms of.
I demoed early versions of this tune with the initial lineup of my trio, featuring my long time collaborator and occasional musical heel Chris Malone on bass and the rightfully busy Madison George on drums. I put the trio on the backburner for a little bit and this lineup folded, but I remain in the debt of these cats for helping me out with the proof of concept of this track and the concept of the Colin Poulton Trio.
Once the group started gigging with Thomas Altman on bass and Madison George, later Ian Strobino on drums, we added an early version of this tune to our setlist. My vision for the group was mix in my original tunes with jazz standards and this one was easy to get in to early setlists. It originally features just the A and B section, the bridge was written in the week leading up to the session to track it to pad it out and it ended up giving me a good intro as well.
It’s a great feeling to be releasing original music for the first time since Montezuma Fire Machine’s Astrolabe. I’ve grown a lot since that record and have lived a ton of life as well. Putting this record out is especially meaningful because for a long time I felt rather untruthfully that being a sideman meant I wasn’t an artist. That was something that my wife Hannah helped me break through and I’m also in her debt; she’s a big reason why I pursued this project. I’m proud to be releasing something that sounds like me.
Please enjoy “The Admiral’s Misadventure” and stay tuned for info about the EP

Enjoying the song man! Your drummer is really solid in this setting, fills up space in a nice way without feeling like he's overplaying and your tone is great! What are you playing through here? Looking forward to hearing the rest of the EP!
Yo, Colin! I just got back from a seeing a jazz trio about an hour ago, and your tune was as good as anything I heard. Good stuff. Looking forward to hearing the full album.
Hope you're doing well!
